About Engaging with Vietnam
The Engaging with Vietnam Initiative
Engaging with Vietnam was founded in 2009 by Dr. Phan Le Ha who was at that time lecturing in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Australia. The Initiative received strong support from the University, particularly from Professor Stephanie Fahey, the then Deputy Vice Chancellor (Global Engagement). Phan Le Ha is now a Full Professor at the College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), USA; and UHM is the new home for Engaging with Vietnam (EWV). Since 2012, Dr. Liam C. Kelley, Associate Professor in the Department of History, University of Hawaii at Manoa, has become another key person jointly developing EWV with Phan Le Ha.
EWV has brought together scholars, researchers, policy makers, diplomatic officials and the general public to collaboratively engage with knowledge production and scholarship building related to Vietnam. Annual scholarly conferences are a major part of the Initiative. Each conference focuses on one theme.
To date there have been eight EWV conferences co-hosted by a number of institutions and organizations in Vietnam, Australia, and the United States.
The 9thEWV conference is going to take place in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and An Giang, Vietnam from December 28th 2017 to January 4th 2018. It is co-hosted by University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, and University of Hawaii at Manoa, with support from Thu Dau Mot University and Ga0/ZeroStation.

Since 2009, the Engaging with Vietnam Initiative has not only helped promote scholarship building, knowledge generation and transfer as well as academic collaborations between overseas institutions and Vietnamese institutions, organizations and government ministries, but has also offered space for individuals and entities to engage with a wide range of academic and professional activities that are mutually beneficial. The Initiative has played an important part in preparing research students working on Vietnam-related topics for high quality research work and offering them an academic playing field to disseminate their research and learn from other scholars from multiple disciplines. It also raises the importance to engage intellectually with Vietnam scholarship in research and professional work.
To date EWV has grown far beyond the initial Australia and Vietnam focus to attract significant attention and participation from individuals and organizations in broader Asia, the USA, and Europe.
The Initiative looks forward to your continued support and engagement.
Sincerely,
Phan Le Ha & Liam Kelley
